In this Viewpoint article, Terry Nichols, who recently retired from HOK and is currently chairman of the Newforma UK User Community, discusses the value that can be obtained from organizing the processes and information employed during the design development phase of AEC, so that this experience can be checked for completeness and compliance with policies, procedures, building codes, etc. as well as re-used for future projects. He considers a possible solution to this through the use of Newforma as a tool to guide, monitor and capture processes and experience in order to evolve better ways of working.

In this Viewpoint article, Brian Lighthart, who is a project architect doing commercial and light industrial architectural projects and has been using BIM for several years, puts forth the proposition that no one really has a global perspective of the complex set of issues involved in BIM, despite it being a global revolution in design methods. But there ought to be a group dedicated to taking an overall view, and be doing something big with that view.

In this Viewpoint article, Dexter Bachelder, Aconex VP Americas, argues for the need to drive construction project success through neutral, trust-based collaboration. To consistently complete large-scale construction projects on time and on budget, AEC firms have to develop a collaboration strategy and mechanism that will work for all the stakeholders in a project, allowing them to operate efficiently with a level of trust usually developed within a single organization or team.

In this Viewpoint article, Dr. Don Mclean, Founder and CEO of Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES) discuss what radical changes need to be undertaken to the design process, changes in mindset required, and the important role Building Performance Analysis software plays in enabling the Lean, Clean, Green approach that is needed to achieve zero-carbon building design.

In this Viewpoint article, Viktor Várkonyi, CEO of Graphisoft, discusses the implementation of “open” design collaboration workflows, which are in the best interest of all parties involved in an AEC project, given the plurality of their design tools and processes. He explores how BIM can bring the benefits that have been achieved by the individual design disciplines to interdisciplinary design collaboration as well, by providing a new level of transparency and integration of design processes for building projects of any type or size.

In this Viewpoint article, Al Douglas, President of a private consulting firm in Kanata, Ontario Canada, discusses the dramatic technological and methodological changes underway in the AEC industry, and the main vehicles of delivering this change: BIM, IPD and a developing open standard called COBie. He then zeroes in on an important component that is required to make all of these effective—content management and the collaborative role it plays in the lifecycle of a building.
